HOME IMPROVEMENT 101

PROJECT ROLE

Co-Designer & Developer

PROBLEM

The original intent for this course started as a way to explain the weather hazards of certain parts of the country to better understand what's needed to build and insure a home there. In particular, there was a significant amount of nuance to understanding this topic that the subject matter expert felt the learners weren't retaining to the degree they need.

SOLUTION

For this, I suggested that the course start off by providing a digestible amount of information on the subject matter. I believed it would help retention by giving the learner a series of hypotheticals based on the information provided, and these hypotheticals would act as a form of practice for any assessment questions that follow where the questions would add a bit more difficulty to test comprehension. I also suggested a form of gamified navigation to add engagement, and this led me to learning how to create a side scrolling walking effect for an avatar controlled by the learner.

TOOLS

  • Microsoft PowerPoint

  • Adobe Illustrator

  • Adobe Photoshop

  • Articulate Storyline 360

  • JavaScript

STORYBOARD

I started the storyboard in PowerPoint by meeting with the subject matter experts and gathering all of the information they needed to be present in the course. From there I broke down the flow of learning by going from information to hypothetical in each lesson, and continuing that trend. I also created tutorial tone audio scripts.

ASSET DESIGN

I began designing the assets in Illustrator to be used in the course based on downloads from Getty Images, such as the specific houses with architecture based on the storyboard and interactive maps that will display location based information.

AVATAR ANIMATION

The avatar I found on Envato with a pre-made collection of animations and emotes. I brought these MOV files into Photoshop as animation layers and exported the avatar's animations as low resolution GIFs in order to run more efficiently in Storyline.

STORYLINE

The first thing I wanted to do in Storyline was to see if the side scrolling gamified feature could be created in Storyline using JavaScript. After asking for programming assistance from a fellow developer on my team, we managed to successfully figure it out by attaching the background to a slider and moving it based on X-axis values. After that, I developed the remainder of the course using common triggers in relation to the storyboard.
