THE KNIGHTS AND DRAGONS
PROJECT ROLE
Designer & Developer
PROBLEM
This course was designed to fulfill the requirements of Kevin Thorn's Storyline Next Level Design certification, where we had to create a course utilizing a specific set of Storyline features. In this installment we had to use a slider, randomized variable, etc.
SOLUTION
Given that we could based this course on anything and I had just started playing Monster Hunter World and Stories, I knew I wanted to make it dragon slaying in some way. From there, I utilized the slider to act as a vantage position for the knight to deal more damage with the risk of taking more damage for balancing. Then I utilized the Rock-Paper-Scissors action system from Monster Hunter Stories for combat.

DESIGN AND SOUND
After I came up with the basic concept, I started off by creating the custom user interface icons in Photoshop and Illustrator from Getty Images stock designs. These included health identifiers of the characters, their action abilities and the opening screen logo. I also decided to download all of the sound effects I would use such as a sword strike, magic spells and the background music.

USING VYOND
For any assets that I felt would be easier to get from Vyond, I put them on a green screen and exported the GIFs and MP4s. I mainly decided to get the Dragon and Knight since hand drawing the animations would take too much time.

CHARACTER KEYING
I used After Effects to key out the green screen for each asset downloaded from Vyond and re-exported them. Originally I wanted to make the animations remain GIFs but I've had issues with high quality GIFs in the past with Storyline so I just decided to use still images.

STORYLINE
The last step was using Storyline to bring everything together. The main slides consisted of the Knight's position you choose relative to the slider, and from there I created 11 layers: 9 consisting of the 3 by 3 action selection of the Knight and Dragon, 1 for success and 1 for failure. The Dragon's action is the randomized variable.
